International Logistics: Sea vs Air Freight
Compare international freight modalities and learn which is most suitable for your type of operation.
Choosing between sea and air freight is one of the most important decisions in international logistics. Each modality has its advantages, limitations, and ideal applications. Understanding the differences is fundamental to optimize costs and deadlines in foreign trade operations.
Sea Freight
Sea freight is the most widely used modality in international trade, accounting for over 80% of the global volume of goods. It is indicated for large volumes and goods with less urgent delivery requirements.
Advantages: lower cost per unit for large volumes, greater cargo capacity, ideal for heavy or bulky goods. Disadvantages: longer delivery times (30-45 days from Asia, 15-20 days from Europe), lower shipping frequency.
Air Freight
Air freight is indicated for high-value goods, perishable products, urgent shipments, or smaller volumes. Delivery time is significantly shorter: 3-7 days for most destinations.
Advantages: fast delivery, greater security for high-value cargo, shorter transit time. Disadvantages: higher cost, weight and volume limitations, restrictions for dangerous goods.
How to choose?
The decision should consider: cargo volume and weight, merchandise value, delivery urgency, total operation cost, and product characteristics. In many cases, a strategic combination of both modalities may be the best solution.
